Abstract:The chronic lateral ankle instability is a common kind of sports injury. The term of “internal brace” AND “ligament” OR “ankle” were used to search studies of internal brace in the management of chronic lateral ankle instability in PubMed, Embase and CNKI. Related biomechanical features, suitable indications, methods and clinical performance were summarized. Biomechanical tests showed superior performance to improve the immediate stability. Compared with modified Brostr?m procedure, the single use or combination of internal brace provided excellent clinical and radiological outcomes, especially for patients with general joint laxity, revision surgery and patients who need quick return to exercise or sports. The internal brace should be applied in actually necessary patients and should not overuse it in other patients without high risk of failure.
