Abstract:Spontaneous resorption of lumbar disc herniation occurs when the size of disc herniation decreases partly or disappeares totally without surgical intervention, documented on serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The phenomenon happens occasionally in extruded or sequestered LDH patients. This provides more options for the patients who are not willing to undergo surgical treatment, avoiding the risk of operation and a series of problems after surgery. How to predict occurrence of spontaneous resorption is especially important. This article reviews and analyzes the precipitating factors and the possible mechanisms of spontaneous resorption.
