Abstract:Meniscus is a very important part of the knee, which located between condyles of femur and tibial plateau. The lateral part of the meniscus is thick while the medial part is thin. And the gap between the condyles of femur and tibial plateau is filled by meniscus. The meniscus is made of fibrous cartilage, and the collagen fibers are arranged predominantly in a circumferential pattern. This fiber orientation is important in providing strength when loaded. So the physiological functions of meniscus are very important, such as shock absorption, load transmission and improving joint stability. Meniscus lesion is one of the most common sport injury in the knee, the treatment strategy changed gradually with the better understanding of meniscus, which changed from total meniscectomy to preserving as much meniscus tissue as possible. In recent years, the vision of surgeons gradually moved from the knee to the whole lower limb. The relationship between lower limb alignment and meniscus was discussed in a few papers, and some correlations were discovered between them. It will be failed if only focus on the knee joint and ignoring the lower limb alignment when treating meniscus lesions. Therefore, we recommend that lower limb alignment should be taken into account conventionally in the treatment of meniscus lesions, and to make a more reasonable therapeutic strategy.
