Abstract:Objective To introduce the technique and primary clinical outcomes of Stage operation for open calcaneal fractures of Gustilo type IIIB.Methods From January 2013 to August 2019, 9 cases of open calcaneal fractures of Gustilo type IIIB were treated with stage operation ,Their wounds were completely debrided in first stage, the calcaneus fracture was reset Functionally, and fixied with the Kirschner wire and lag screw. In the second stage the wounds was repeatedly debrided, and were followed by flap coverage to be sure no infection. Results The operation was successful in 9 patients without amputation, and the average length of hospital stay was 39 days. Two patients had poor marginal flap healing and the wounds healed after 3 months and 5 months through wound dressing change respectively.Anatomic reduction of subtalar articular surface in 2 patients and functional reduction in 7 patients.B?hler Angle, Gissane Angle, calcaneal height and width recovered satisfactorily in all patients, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).In the last follow-up, Mazur ankle symptom and function scores were used to evaluate the efficacy: excellent in 1 case, better in 7 cases, and good in 1 case. Conclusion Stage operation is an effective treatment for open calcaneal fractures of Gustilo type IIIB and satisfactory clinical outcomes.
