Abstract:Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease characterized by degeneration of articular cartilage, and the imbalance of chondrocyte metabolism is an important cause of its occurrence and development. TGF-β superfamily as a growth factor plays an important role in chondrocyte proliferation, maintenance of phenotype and synthesis of extracellular matrix. However, overactivated TGF- β superfamily promotes chondrocyte hypertrophy, apoptosis, and endochondral bone growth to promote the development of osteoarthritis. Spp24, which has a high bind to TGF- β superfamily members, is worth considering as a potential therapeutic target for osteoarthritis. This article reviews the role of TGF- β superfamily in chondrogenic degeneration in osteoarthritis and the potential function of Spp24.
